PC players of Halo: Campaign Evolved can finally invite a friend to sit on the couch and play together. The long-standing absence of local split-screen co-op on the PC version has ended with a new community patch. This change matters because it restores a core multiplayer feature that console players have enjoyed since launch.

Community patch unlocks hidden co-op functionality for Steam users

The update comes from modder JPurd123, who published the file on NexusMods. The modification targets the PC build of Halo: Campaign Evolved, developed by 343 Industries. It specifically unlocks the hidden co-op functionality that was already present in the game files but inaccessible to users.

The modder explains that the PC version never had the split-screen code stripped out. The console builds ship with local split-screen enabled, and the PC build keeps the same underlying assets. The HUD layouts, sign-in UI, visual effects, and audio parameters are all still cooked into the game files. The PC config file simply had the split-screen toggle set to false by default.

Users must install the UE4SS scripting system before applying this mod. The patch currently supports only the Steam version of the game. The author notes that the Xbox app version remains untested and may not work correctly. Players using keyboard and mouse alongside controllers should be aware of potential input conflicts. One user reported that the second player becomes uncontrollable when using this input setup.

We looked at the last Halo: Campaign Evolved update earlier while tracking balance and stability themes. This new mod addresses a specific feature gap rather than general gameplay balance. The split-screen feature is now available for Steam users who have the required scripting framework installed.
