Google Chrome 148 Update: AI Autofill, Government ID Support, and Security Fixes

Google has released Chrome 148, a major update that introduces AI-powered features and fixes 127 security vulnerabilities. The browser now includes an improved AI mode that lets users ask questions through the address bar or a new tab. It collects information from relevant pages and answers in natural language, supporting follow-up questions.

AI mode and autofill enhancements

Chrome 148 enhances autofill with AI, allowing users to automatically fill credit card numbers and addresses with their consent. On Android, the browser uses AI to interpret web forms for better autofill. A new feature adds government ID autofill from Google Wallet, supporting driver's license, passport, Social Security Number, Known Traveler Number, and Redress Control Number. The update also introduces a Prompt API for interacting with large language models locally via the Gemini Nano model, which is about 4GB in size. Additionally, Chrome 148 improves HTTP/3 support for websites.

Security fixes and next version

The update is available globally starting May 7, 2025. The built-in Gemini chatbot is expanding to 49 countries and regions in Asia Pacific.

Chrome 148 fixes 127 vulnerabilities, three of which are rated critical: a Blink integer overflow, a Chromoting use-after-free, and a corrupted move memory issue. The next version, Chrome 149, is scheduled for release on June 2.
