Gamers in China are facing an unexpected hardware risk as thieves target gaming hotels to steal RAM modules. Guests at gaming hotels may find systems with altered or missing memory modules due to the theft of components. The thefts demonstrate a security weakness in shared gaming setups where internal parts can be easily accessed and removed.

Two men detained for stealing memory modules from four hotels

The thefts involved two suspects, identified as Li and Cheng, who operated across four different gaming hotels in Xinjiang. They used a consistent method of checking into rooms, opening the PC cases, and removing the memory sticks. This targeted approach allowed them to collect a significant amount of hardware in a short period.

The suspects stole a total of 16 RAM sticks during their criminal spree, which took place between May 15 and May 31, 2024. They sold the stolen memory modules through second-hand online platforms and offline stores. The total value of the stolen goods was recorded at over 13,200 RMB (around $1,946).

Both suspects have been criminally detained by local authorities following the investigation. Gaming hotel operators are advised to implement stronger physical security measures for their computer hardware. Consumers should be cautious as stolen memory modules may appear in second-hand sales or offline stores.
