SpaceX has reported significant performance gains for its Starlink satellite internet service in the United States. The company attributes a drastic 30 percent increase in median download speeds to the expansion of its orbital constellation. This improvement positions the network to better support high-bandwidth applications ahead of the company's initial public offering.
Data from Ookla indicates that median U.S. download speeds rose from 100 Mbps in the first quarter of 2025 to 132 Mbps by the fourth quarter. The proportion of users meeting the Federal Communications Commission's minimum broadband benchmark of 100/20 Mbps also climbed from 17 percent to nearly 45 percent during the same period. These metrics reflect the impact of launching over 120 Falcon 9 missions to expand the active satellite count to nearly 10,000 units.

Future infrastructure upgrades include the deployment of V3 satellites via Starship 3. SpaceX announced that these next-generation satellites will deliver gigabit speeds and 5ms latency. These specifications are designed to enhance the experience for dish owners and Starlink Mobile 5G services, particularly for gaming applications.
The regulatory landscape remains complex for the satellite provider. The FCC previously denied an $886 million Rural Digital Opportunity Fund subsidy, citing failures to meet speed requirements in late 2023 when median speeds were significantly lower. Meanwhile, the completion of the FCC's BEAD fiber rollout is now projected for 2030, a timeline subject to change based on current construction trajectories.
