Players hoping for multiplayer in The Last of Us Part II have a new, albeit unofficial, option on the horizon. A PC modder is actively rebuilding the Factions multiplayer mode that was originally featured in the first game. This community project offers a way to experience cooperative and competitive gameplay that the developer never included in the sequel.

Modder Speclizer targets September 2026 launch for unofficial Factions multiplayer

The modder known as Speclizer began work on this project in January 2026. The initial goal was to create a local proof of concept that allowed two players to interact simultaneously. This early stage focused on establishing the basic framework for shared gameplay within the single-player engine.

Technical progress has moved beyond simple movement to complex synchronization. The mod now handles sprinting, backpack interactions, door mechanics, and squeeze-through animations in sync. Developers solved hit detection issues by reassigning remote player collision layers to match NPC layers, which prevents collision errors.

The current build includes a life count system, a radar, spawn points, and respawn handlers inspired by the Supply Raid mode. These features aim to replicate the structured combat experience of the original game's multiplayer. The modder has set a target release date of September 2026 for the public launch.

Legal risks remain a significant concern for this project. Sony and Naughty Dog could issue a DMCA takedown if the mod is released to the public. The developer acknowledges that unauthorized modification of copyrighted intellectual property carries inherent legal threats that could halt the project at any time.
