The story originates from a 2018 email exchange between Newell and Elon Musk. Newell informed Musk that Kojima had visited Valve to discuss his new game and mentioned his focus on artificial intelligence. Newell also conveyed Kojima's strong desire to travel to space and offered to introduce the two men.

Newell shared details about a past interaction with game developer Hideo Kojima that highlights the designer's long-standing ambition to visit space.
