Sony Interactive Entertainment and Santa Monica Studio are moving forward with God of War Laufey. The project targets a global launch on PlayStation 5 in 2027. God of War Laufey director Ariel Lawrence responds to inquiries regarding the role of companions in gameplay.
Director Ariel Lawrence explains how the cosmic jelly cube companion integrates into combat and puzzle mechanics for the upcoming PlayStation 5 title.
Lawrence explains that two new characters, Phranque and Rue, play central roles in combat and exploration. Players will use these companions for traversal and puzzle solving alongside the main character Fay. Development staff integrated companion functionalities directly into the foundational architecture instead of treating them as secondary additions.
Phranque appears as a talking cosmic jelly cube voiced by Jack Quaid. Lawrence notes that Phranque entered development early under head of creative Cory Barlog. The cubic shape allows for specific mechanical implementations that the studio finds useful for world interaction.
The companion system supports both combat assists and supplemental roles to Fay. Rue joins Phranque in providing traversal and puzzle solving capabilities. The design work focuses on how each character's unique form fits into different parts of the game world.
God of War Laufey arrives globally in 2027 on PlayStation 5. Current disclosures do not include specific cost details or geographic availability constraints. Sony Interactive Entertainment verifies the projected launch timeframe but retains confidentiality regarding technical specifics.
