California lawmakers have passed AB 2047, the California Firearm Printing Prevention Act. The legislation targets the growing use of consumer 3D printers for manufacturing firearms and mandates built-in blocking technology on all devices sold within the state.
Legislation mandates built-in blocking technology on all devices sold within the state.
The bill applies to every 3D printer offered for sale or lease in California. Manufacturers must integrate software that prevents users from printing objects containing firearm components. The law also prohibits any attempt to bypass, disable, or tamper with these mandated safety features.
Printer makers are required to file sworn attestations confirming their models meet state standards by July 1, 2028. The California Department of Justice will publish the specific performance criteria for the blocking technology by January 1, 2028. Compliance ensures that printers cannot produce functional firearm parts without the authorized software running.
Violating the new rules carries significant legal and financial consequences. Selling non-compliant devices after March 1, 2029, results in civil penalties of up to $25,000 per violation. Bypassing the blocking software is classified as a misdemeanor offense under state law.
