Kadokawa Games has announced RPG Maker U2U following Valve's removal of the "RPG Maker" tag from Steam. The release marks the latest PC title in the long-running series since RPG Maker MZ launched in 2020. It also arrives two years after RPG Maker With released for PlayStation consoles and Nintendo Switch in 2024. The franchise has alternated between PC and console releases since 1988.

New tool adds depth to 2D maps using Unity Engine

The software introduces a new feature called Perspective 2D to add 3D depth to traditional 2D maps. It runs on the Unity Engine to support modern graphical effects and a rich sense of depth. The tool maintains compatibility with 2D assets created for previous RPG Maker versions. Developers can use it without specialized knowledge.

The announcement points toward a release window sometime this year or next. No official launch date has confirmed yet. The series typically follows a steady release cadence that suggests an imminent arrival.

Independent developers may find the update useful for creating titles that blend 3D graphics with classic 2D sensibilities. The HD-2D style gained popularity after Square Enix released Octopath Traveler in 2018.
