CERN Creates First Antimatter Qubit Using Single Antiproton

CERN's BASE collaboration has created the first antimatter quantum bit using a single antiproton. The antiproton was kept in a superposition of two spin states for nearly a minute.

Antiproton spin superposition maintained for nearly a minute

The team observed Rabi oscillations in the antiproton spin for the first time. Spin-inversion probabilities exceeded 80 percent, with coherence times around 50 seconds. Transition linewidths were 16 times narrower than in previous measurements.

According to Stefan Ulmer, future experiments could improve the precision of antiproton magnetic moment measurements by 10- to 100-fold. A future BASE-STEP system could increase spin coherence times tenfold.

The research was published in Nature. CERN has not confirmed the timeline for further experiments.
