The core of the speculation involves SK hynix evaluating Intel's Embedded Multi-die Interconnect Bridge for use in next-generation HBM modules. This technology aims to provide a cost-effective alternative to TSMC's CoWoS packaging, which currently faces capacity constraints. Industry analysis suggests that Nvidia alone accounts for roughly 60 percent of global CoWoS demand this year. Intel's foundry division is actively marketing both EMIB and EMIB-T technologies to external customers to capture this growing market share.

Both companies are heavily investing in physical infrastructure to support advanced packaging capabilities. SK hynix recently broke ground on a $3.87 billion advanced packaging plant in Indiana. Simultaneously, the company approved a 19 trillion won facility, valued at approximately $12.9 billion, for packaging and testing in South Korea. Intel CFO Dave Zinsner stated in March that the foundry division is close to closing deals that will generate billions in annual revenue, signaling strong commercial momentum for these packaging solutions.
