Is "RTX 5070 Ti" running legacy software with 2010 nvidia design garage raytracing demo, proves it is possible to make legacy software compatible with modern hardware by a certain way of technical bridge. This is an important experiment. It shows a significant change in compatibility caused by NVIDIA new arch. – Blackwell which actually completely cut out 32bit CUDA support. This may leave those who run old raytracing software into the situation where you can't easily install them and you may need some special solution to try to solve this problem by engineering.
AI reverse-engineering bridges 16-year gap between Fermi and Blackwell ray tracing architectures
"RTX 5070 Ti" is a NVIDIA's Blackwell architecture-based hardware that strictly requires 64bit operation only on CUDA side. This means any software that needs 32bit HW compatible function will be incompatible for current GPU's.
- Architecture: Blackwell
- CUDA Support: 64-bit only (32-bit hardware support removed)
- OptiX Version: 9.1
- Original Demo: Design Garage (2010)
- Original Architecture: Fermi
To fix this issue, some one uses AI technology to reverse engineer the old Design garage demo software(16 year old code) based on fermi arch and optix3. To make this old demo work, he managed to rebuild around 280 important function & replace optix.1.dll to custom library which translate old 32bit commands to new Optix9.1 format. So with this way, legacy software can make use of powerful raytracing hardware on RTX 5070 Ti by shared memory(not due to missing 32bit cuda).
Running this legacy software, it keeps original image quality of 2010 demo, but extremely more efficient than old hardware. It shows the essential core raytracing codes of early raytracing experiment are still workable when adapt to current software framework. And also it shows optix 9.1 flexibility is strong enough to process translate old codes.
This shows that we can run history raytracing workload on RTX 5070 Ti by software translating way though there's no 32bit support for this hardware. And it needs AI assistant reverse engineering+special dll(optix3->optix9.1) to make this happen. We can run this legacy demo on modern GPU. It tells how difficult it is to keep compatible with old software when there's no direct support for hardware.
