The update targets the tdfxfb framebuffer driver, which handles basic video output for the PCI and AGP versions of the card. Developer Daniel Palmer tested the changes using a Voodoo 3 installed in an Amiga 4000 system equipped with a PCI bridge. This configuration demonstrates that the driver can initialize the hardware on architectures far removed from its original PC design.
Tom’s Hardware reports that this update enables classic Voodoo GPUs to boot without relying on system firmware. The kernel change focuses solely on framebuffer initialization and does not include modern 3D acceleration or DRM/KMS support. Users should expect basic display functionality rather than full gaming performance from this specific driver update.
Palmer is also developing a separate experimental 3D stack called smoltdfx that aims to run Quake on real Voodoo 3 hardware. This custom OpenGL implementation allows the game to run on the physical card, though performance remains limited.
