Valve’s Steam Controller requires users to manually place it on the charging Puck, a friction point that modder Ray Foss has addressed with a new automated solution. The project eliminates the need to search for the controller in low light, keeping the device ready for play without requiring manual effort.

Browser tool uses camera tracking and vibration motors to guide controller to dock

The core of this innovation is a browser-based application called Auto-Charge Tracker. Foss designed the tool to run on standard web browsers, allowing users to access the automation logic without installing specialized desktop software. The system relies on the computer’s camera to monitor the physical space around the charging station.

The software tracks the physical position of the Steam Controller using visual markers. Once the system identifies the controller's location, it sends a signal to trigger the device's vibration motors. These motors generate enough force to physically nudge the controller across the surface, guiding it directly toward the charging Puck.

This DIY project highlights a practical workaround for the hardware's current design limitations. The 2026 Steam Controller supports charging via the Puck or USB-C, but it lacks the internal mechanisms to return to the dock on its own. The mod demonstrates how external software and hardware feedback can compensate for missing self-returning capabilities.

The Auto-Charge Tracker represents a functional proof of concept for automated peripheral management. It confirms that the Steam Controller can be physically manipulated through its vibration feedback system to achieve precise positioning.
