TOPC is preparing a new mini PC that breaks from the standard connectivity limits of its previous models. The company has previewed a design centered around the Intel Core Ultra 7 255H processor and a specialized expansion interface. This shift targets users who need high-speed external peripherals rather than just internal storage upgrades.
New device uses MCIO standard to enable high-speed external peripherals
The device relies on the MCIO 8i (SFF-1016) standard to handle data traffic. This specific connector allows the system to utilize PCIe Gen5 x8 bandwidth. Previous TOPC products typically capped at PCIe Gen4 speeds, which restricted external expansion options for power users.
TOPC claims this unlocked bandwidth enables high-speed operation of external PCIe AIC graphics cards and other peripherals. The architecture supports direct connection of add-in cards that would normally require a full desktop motherboard slot. This capability positions the mini PC closer to traditional tower systems in terms of expandability.
The exact model name and detailed configuration options remain undisclosed at this stage. Sources indicate only that the new hardware is based on the Core Ultra 7 255H chip. GPD previously introduced a similar PCIe Gen5 MCIO solution in April 2024, suggesting a growing market for high-bandwidth mini PCs.
