Linux Lite 8.0 Launches with New Calamares Installer and GTK4 Apps

Linux Lite 8.0 ships today, bringing a new installer and updated software to the beginner-friendly distribution. The release targets users who want a lightweight experience without sacrificing modern tools.

New installer and updated software

The new version is based on Ubuntu 26.04 LTS, codenamed Hematite. It uses the Xfce desktop environment with LightDM display manager. All custom applications have been translated into 22 languages.

Key changes include a switch to the Calamares installer, replacing the older Ubiquity. The default web browser is now Firefox, and Python has been updated to version 3.14.4+. The system monitor Htop has been replaced by Btop.

System requirements and availability

The graphical user interface apps have been ported from GTK3 and WebKit2 to GTK4. New applications include Linux Lite Advanced Performance Kernels, MyAI, and various Lite tools. The ISO image is 2.36 GB in size.

Minimum system requirements include a 1.5 GHz dual-core processor, 4 GB of RAM, 40 GB of storage, and a 1366×768 display. The operating system is available now for worldwide download.

Linux Lite 8.0 continues the project's focus on making Linux accessible to newcomers. The update brings modern software foundations while keeping the familiar Xfce interface. Users can download the ISO from the official website.
